Filum Desk
“Filum: A thread like anatomical structure; a filament.”
The Filum table was initially designed to be used as a large desk drawing space, despite this due to the large size of the table it will also double as a dining table. The table is efficient in its aesthetics as well as its use of materials.
Concept:
The initial design for the table came from a brainstorm of the keyword: Efficient. This led me to look at how animals are efficient in their structure, especially the butterfly. The butterfly is very delicate yet able to fly in a variety of weather conditions. These two characteristics would deem the butterfly as efficient. Hence the design is based upon the principle of the structure of butterfly’s. Two legs either side of my design join together on an acute angle to replicate that of the wings of the butterfly. These legs are made more efficient by the removal of excess material. In the same way that a butterfly has veins through its wings, unnecessary material from the legs was removed in order to make the design lighter and ultimately more efficient. Another feature of biomimicry in the design is the long beam that rungs underneath the table, this replicated the long agile body of the butterfly.
