Stillwater Sanctuary

This assignment makes use of the four planning practices, including Low impact urban design and development (LIUDD), in order to produce a suitable mixed use proposal for a peri-urban site on the city fringe. Stillwater is the location of the proposed development, and extensive site research on the area was carried out in order to justify the location of the developments. This report considers the LIUDD principles and looks at the practicality of implementing them throughout the development

LOW IMPACT URBAN DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT (LIUDD)

LIUDD is a holistic approach to development at various urban and peri-urban scales, it analyses human activities and the impacts they cause on the environment (Van Roon and Van Roon). LIUDD encourages development and design to occur within the limitation of the “ecological carrying capacity” whilst “allowing for urbanisation at all densities” (2009:1). Often the principles of LIUDD are used to reduce “the effects of human activities on natural processes”. LIUDD defines the environment as a whole interrelated ecosystem consisting of land, water, air, flora and fauna; this ensures resources are available for future generations and preserves mauri (life force and essence in Maori) values and practices (Van Roon, Van Roon and Trueman, 2009: 1).
